Women's Slippers

This is a great pattern for a light weight slipper. The pattern is easily adjusted to fit any size foot. Simply finish the front of the slipper then work in rows to get the length needed.

Here is a great chart for women's foot sizes.

http://tip-buying.blogspot.co.nz/2010/08/4-tips-to-follow-when-buying-womens.html?showComment=1362124816471#c8008398400043103450 you will need to scroll down the page to find the chart.

The slippers pictured are a large size as my Mum gets swollen feet when it is hot.

A couple of tips:

  • Ch 2 counts as a hdc throughout pattern.
  • Ch 1 does not count as a sc.
  • The only stitch you may need to know other than the basics is a crossed hdc stitch which basically the same as a crossed dc but a hdc. You can find a instructions for this HERE
  • If you know you have thinner feet please go down a hook size or two. Test the slippers when you get to round 4 to see how they fit over your toes. You may also find this effects the length of the slipper so use your judgement in this case to when you will start working in rows.
  • If you still find the fit to wide please try starting with 8 hdc into the circle. Each row will then have a different stitch count so
Round 1: 8 hdc.
Round 2: 8 hdc, 8 ch 1 sp.
Round 3: 16 hdc, 8 ch 1 sp
Round 4: 24 hdc, 8 ch 1 sp
Round 5-15: 32 hdc
Row 1-end: 20 hdc

  • There is no right or wrong length for each part of the slipper (round over toes/rows along foot) as long as the entire slipper measures the length you want. Do fewer rounds around the toe part and add a strap for a cute Mary Jane slipper.

Right lets get started.

THIS PATTERN IS WRITTEN IN US TERMS. IF YOU NEED HELP CONVERTING STITCHES TO UK TERMS PLEASE SEE THIS CHART THAT ALSO PROVIDES LINKS TO VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO COMPLETE THE BASIC STITCHES.  IF YOU NEED MORE ADVANCED INSTRUCTIONS PLEASE SEARCH YOUTUBE OR GOOGLE THE STITCH.

4.50 mm hook for medium width feet. Gauge -  First 2 rounds measure 1.6 inches
5.00 mm crochet hook for large feet. Gauge - first 2 rounds measure 1.75 inches

DK yarn
Scissors

Tape measure

Pattern:

Starting with a magic circle, or ch 3 and join to first ch with a sl st to create a circle.

Round 1: Ch 2, 9 hdc into the circle. Join to ch 2 with a sl st. (10 hdc)

Round 2:  Ch 3, (counts as first hdc and ch 1) *hdc in next st, ch 1* Repeat around. (10 hdc, 10 ch 1 sp) Join to ch 1 space with a sl st.

Round 3: Ch 3, (counts as first hdc and ch 1), hdc in first ch 1 sp. *(hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next ch 1 sp* repeat around. Join to first ch 1 sp with a sl st. (20 hdc, 10 ch 1 spaces)

Round 4: Ch 2, 2 dc in first ch 1 sp, ch 1, *3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1* repeat around and join to top of ch 2 with a sl st. (30 dc, 10 ch 1 spaces).

Test slippers here for width.

Round 5: Ch 2, hdc into next 2 st, hdc into ch 1 space. * hdc in each of the next 3 stitches, hdc into ch 1 space* Repeat around. Join to top of ch 2 with a sl st (40 hdc)

Round 6: Ch 2, skip 1 stitch, hdc in next stitch, hdc between previous ch 2 and hdc. * sk 1 st, hdc in next, hdc between previous 2 stitches* Repeat around. Hdc in last st. Join to top of ch 2 with a sl st. (40 hdc)

Round 7: Ch 2, hdc BLO around. Join to top of ch 2 with a sl st. (40 hdc)

Repeat rows 6 and 7 until piece covers the front of the toes.

As an example this is the measurements I would work for the different sizes:

Shoe sizes US 5 - 9 - Repeat rows 6-7 three more times. With a 5 mm hook I got a length of 4.25 inches

Shoe sizes US 9 1/2 Plus - Repeat rows 6-7 four times. With a 5 mm hook I got a length of 5 inches

Round 13 (15): Ch 2, hdc BLO each st around.

Now working in rows to make the ankle opening,

Row 1: Ch 2, skip 1 stitch, hdc in next stitch, hdc between previous ch 2 and hdc. * sk 1 st, hdc in next, hdc between previous 2 stitches* Repeat another 10 times for a total of 12 crossed hdc's. Hdc in last st.. (26 hdc)

Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Hdc FLO (loop closes to you) around. (26 hdc)

Row 3: Ch 2,turn. Skip 1 stitch, hdc in next stitch, hdc between previous ch 2 and hdc. * sk 1 st, hdc in next, hdc between previous 2 stitches* Repeat another 10 times for a total of 12 crossed hdc's. Hdc in last st.. (26 hdc)

If you started with 8 hdc,

Row 1: Ch 2, skip 1 stitch, hdc in next stitch, hdc between previous ch 2 and hdc. * sk 1 st, hdc in next, hdc between previous 2 stitches* Repeat another 7 times for a total of 9 crossed hdc's. Hdc in last st.. (20 hdc)

Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Hdc FLO (loop closes to you) around. (20 hdc)

Row 3: Ch 2,turn. Skip 1 stitch, hdc in next stitch, hdc between previous ch 2 and hdc. * sk 1 st, hdc in next, hdc between previous 2 stitches* Repeat another 7 times for a total of 9 crossed hdc's. Hdc in last st.. (20 hdc)

Repeat rows 2-3 until the entire slipper measures the length you need (follow chart linked above). So for my slippers which are for a size 9 1/2 US I needed to make my slippers measure 10 inches.

Turn slipper inside out and sl st down to close the end of the slipper. Ch 1, turn, sl st back up slipper.

Turn slipper the right side out. Ch 1 and sc around entire slipper, Join to first sc with a sl st. Repeat this round two more times for a total of 3 rounds of sc.

Weave in all ends and your finished.

  1. Hi! I have nominated you for the Liebster Award. Pop over to my blog to pick up your questions and button http://www.oombawka.blogspot.ca Please note, this is an honorary award and you do not have to participate. In fact, I have seen some blogs sporting a different badge indicating that they have received the award but not participated in the question/answer/nomination part of the process. I have put that badge on my blog post as well. Happy Crocheting! Rhondda

  2. Hello, this is my first slipper. What does it mean in row 6 to stitch between 2 previous stitches? When I skip it I seem to only have 20 hdc instead of 40' Thank You. Linda

    2. Thank you so much. I do understand now how to do the hdc cross stitch. I am now working on rows 1-3 after my 15 rows. I am using a 4.50 hook for a medium width slipper. It indicates that I should have 10 full hdc not the 12 because I am using the medium size. However, when I do that first row I end up with 15-16 instead of the 10 hdc cross stitches. Sorry to ask again, but what am I doing wrong please?

  3. Hi Teri, I am working on the medium slipper. I have completed the beginning rows to cover the toe. The next series of rows are 1-3. I am having trouble on row 1 where I am supposed to end up with 10 hdc cross stitches. I end up having 16. Can you please tell me what I am doing wrong?

    1. Hi there, sorry for the delay. I have just had a quick read through of the pattern and I can't see where you are meant to end up with 10 hdc cross stitches? You should have 12 hdc cross stitches and 2 normal hdc on each end to make a total of 26 hdc. That is if you started with 10 hdc at the beginning.

If you started with 8 hdc you should have 9 hdc cross stitches and 2 normal hdc at each end to make a total of 20 hdc.

    2. Hi Teri, On round 15 I ended up with 32 hdc. That is because I started with 8 hdc on round 2 to get the medium size slipper. When I do Row 1 to start the next part of the slipper I still end up with 15 hdc cross stitches instead of the 9 that I am supposed to have. Am I supposed to end round 6 & 7 repeat with 6 or 7? Maybe that is part of the problem? I am so sorry to bug you but I really want to make these. Thank you Teri

    4. Okay so when you are doing Row 1 you need to stop after you do 9 hdc cross stitches and 2 hdc on either end of the rows. You are not doing a complete circle. This is where you start doing rows for the ankle opening.

(20 hdc)

I have taken some photo's for you if that would help to see what you are meant to be doing?
