My son like to play dress ups so I made this cape for him. He is an average size 4 year old but I have included instructions on modifying the size.

8 ply/dk yarn. I used 250g of Crucci Olympus
5.5 mm crochet hook
Yarn needle

  • Ch 2 counts as a hdc.
  • Feel free to substitute with a worsted weight 10 ply yarn as the yarn I used is a thicker dk yarn.
  • If you are following my instructions for size 4 then make sure you can match gauge.
  • If you want to adjust the size simply measure across the back with arms out straight from wrist to wrist. This is your starting length. When it comes to the cape part and stitching closed the arms you want to measure across the back from middle of underarm to middle of underarm. Leave this measurement open in the middle.
Gauge: 13 hdc x 10 rows = 4 inches.

Starting from top down. With blue,

Row 1: Ch 121, hdc into the 3rd ch from the hook and in each stitch across. (120 hdc)
Row 2-21: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each stitch across. (120 hdc)

Fold rectangle in half with right side together (see dashed line). Join by slip stitching the top and bottom edges together. You want to sl st in 35 stitches from each end (join light blue lines) and leave 50 stitches in the middle. This makes the sleeves and the opening. Turn sleeves back to the right side.

Join yarn along bottom edge (purple arrow).

Row 22: Ch 2, hdc into the next 49 stitches. (50 hdc)
Row 23-70: Ch 2, turn, hdc into the next 49 stitches. (50 hdc)

Finish off.

Row 1: With back facing you. Join blue yarn back at where the purple arrow is and ch 1, sc around cape piece. You want to end with a stitch count that is a multiple of 4 + 1. Finish off with blue.

Join white yarn in last blue sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc into the same st as ch 1, *ch 7, skip 3 stitches, sc in next st* Repeat around cape piece.

Row 3: Ch1, turn. *sc, ch 3, sl st into the 3rd ch from the hook, sc* in each ch space around. Sl st into the first sc and finish off.
