Frilly Crochet Jandals (Newborn)

Online Crochet Class

Hi everyone, it's been a while since I have felt like crocheting anything. I originally had a plan to do up some old jandals (flip-flops, thongs, sandals, whatever you call them in your part of the world) but I couldn't end up finding them.

So instead I thought I would play around with some yarn and came up with these Frilly Jandals. These ones are newborn size but I am going to play around with making a few more sizes since they work up so fast.

To make these more practical I suggest adding elastic to the back through the loops or even some pretty ribbon. I don't think they would stay on very long without them.

VIDEO TUTORIAL:

Materials you will need are:
  • 4 ply/fingering weight yarn in two colours, I used pink and white. You can find a great selection here.
  • 3.00 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker (bobby pin)

Gauge: Because it would take just as long to work up a gauge swatch as it does to make the sole there is no gauge. Your finished sole should measure 3.5 inches in length. If your sole is to small go up a hook size. If it is to large go down a hook size.

Pattern:

Soles:

You want to make 4 soles all together, two white and two pink. Start by making the top soles (mine are white). You want to finish off after the top soles and weave in the ends. When you have made the top soles you then want to make the bottom soles (mine are pink). We do this because we do not finish off after the bottom soles, instead we continue on and join the soles together.

Round 1: Ch 13, sc into the 2nd ch from the hook and in next 6 chs, hdc into the next 3 chs, dc into the next ch, 6 dc into the last ch. We will now be working into the other side of the ch. Dc into the next st, hdc into the next 3 st, sc into the next 6 st, 2 sc into the last st.

Do not join, instead you want to work directly into the first st from round 1. Mark this stitch with a stitch marker (and the first st from the next 2 rounds). This will help us keep track of the start of each round.

Round 2: 2 sc into the next st, sc into the next 10 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next st* Repeat between * 3 times. Sc into the next 10 sts, 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts.

Round 3: 2 hdc into each of the next 2 sts, hdc into the next 3 sts, sc into the next 7 sts, hdc in the next 3 sts, 2 hdc into each of the next 4 sts, hdc in the next 3 sts, sc in the next 7 sts, hdc in the next 3 sts, 2 hdc into each of the next 3 sts.

Round 4: Sc into each st around. Sl st into next st. (44 sc)

As mentioned above, if you are making the top of the sole finish off here and weave in the ends. If you are making the bottom of the sole continue as follows.

Position soles so the wrong sides are together and the toe and heels line up. Sl st through both loops on each sole (4 loops) 44 times to join the soles together. Sl st into beginning st to join. Finish off and weave in the end.

Left Jandal Top: with pink

Row 1: Find and mark the stitch at the top (toe) of the sole. Count 12 sts to the right. Join your yarn in this stitch. Ch 10, FPDC around the 2nd dc stitch in round 1, ch 10, count 24 stitches from where you first joined your yarn. sl st into this st to join.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 10 sc around ch, sc into the dc, 10 sc around ch, sl st into the next st on the sole.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, *sc, ch 3 into the next st, sc in next st* Repeat between * across the entire row. Sl st into the next st on the sole to join.

Finish off and weave in all ends.

Right Jandal Top: with pink

Row 1: Find and mark the stitch at the top (toe) of the sole. Count 12 sts to the right. Join your yarn in this stitch. Ch 10, FPDC around the 5th dc stitch in round 1, ch 10, count 24 stitches from where you first joined your yarn. sl st into this st to join.

If you want to add elastic or ribbon you can do this in the ch 3 sp on each end of the top of the jandal.
